Screen Maginifiers

A screen magnifier is software that interfaces with a computer's graphical output to present enlarged screen content.
It is a type of assistive technology suitable for visually impaired people with some functional vision.
Ranges of 1- to 16 times magnification are common with screen magnifiers.
The greater the magnification the smaller the proportion of the original screen content that can be viewed, so users will tend to use the lowest magnification they can manage.
Screen magnifiers are very useful for people with eyesight problems such as macula degeneration or loss of acuteness.

Yet, the sighted trainer or supervisor has not been forgotten, since JAWS offers both audible and visual flexibility.

The screen

Settings for text sizes, fonts and colours can be used to alter the appearance of the screen and to increase its legibility. The monitor controls can be used to alter contrast and brightness. Apple Macintosh and PCs using Windows have built into their system a range of adaptations to help users with visual problems. A larger or higher quality monitor may be easier to see. An anti-glare screen may be required for some users. The working environment is important, taking into consideration such factors as monitor height, position of windows and artificial light.

Speech


Computers can use speech synthesis to read text and screen contents giving a visually impaired person and blind users access. Adding speech support to standard softwares can give additional help to someone with visual difficulties.
Those with very severe difficulties may require specialised speech screen reading software. Early learning software using speech and sound alongside bright pictures can help visually impaired children espically use and interact with computers.
